Usage-evaluation study on Vancomycin among hospitalized pediatric patients: Experience from two tertiary care centers of Eastern India

Background: Vancomycin is a highly effective bactericidal antibiotic with excellent efficacy against resistant Gram-positive microorganisms. It losing its antimicrobial due to rampant usage in Food and Drug Administration/Centers for Diseases Control Prevention as well off-label clinical uses. To stop emerging resistance, judicious use of vancomycin following stewardship required. Aims: This study aims examine the rationality respect adherence Hospital Infection Practices Advisory Committee guidelines dosing, duration, adverse effects, final outcome. Methodology: A retrospective cross-sectional hospital record-based was conducted at two medical colleges Eastern India from January 1, 2020, till June 30, incorporating all admitted newborns children 12 years’ age who received any conditions. However, patients renal diseases or incomplete history were excluded study. Results: cohort 388 included which majority them (41.2%) group 2–12 years males (56.9%). Sepsis (24.2%) pneumonia (20.8%) most common indications prescription. Overall, appropriate found 57.2% maximum seen among neonates (64.5%). The areas inappropriate empirical therapy febrile neutropenia, surgical prophylaxis, treatment coagulase-negative Staphylococcal infection, failure withdraw even after negative culture report organisms. outcome terms improvement 72.4% irrespective appropriate/inappropriate usage. Conclusion: Monitoring should be followed institutional practice emergence resistance vancomycin.
